I Think My Ladybug Is Trying To Tell Me Something
For a week or so now my 18-month-old has been frequently grabbing her diaper and saying "poop" (only in baby speak it's a little more like "beuhp"). Occasionally, that means she pooped. Sometimes it means she will poop. Sometimes she's just wet. But the point is she's becoming aware of the kind of things that lead to potty training. She even likes to go practice sitting on the toilet, then using toilet paper, then flushing and clapping... so I figure I'll just follow her lead, right?
Tonight she took it one step further. She said "beuhp", took her diaper off, and ran in the other room. I was too late to prevent what came next. I got there in time to see that she had already tinkled in the middle of my (thankfully) tile floor-- and was now splashing in it. I immediately swooped her up and took her to the bathtub for a hose-down. I had hubby watch her in the bathtub while I went and cleaned up the mess.
So apparently she's even becoming a bit aware of the feeling of being about to go. So we'll see where this gets us. Potty training is one of those parenting areas where many parents swear by one method or another, so I'm sure many will disagree with my style. With my older daughter we worked on it at her pace and level of interest for a year; she was fully trained by 23 months, so I think we did alright. We'll see how this goes with kiddo #2. I'm sure it will provide me with lots of material to write about.
